Stream C — 13F Institutional Filings

Education only · our voice · free public data

Definition

The institutional-holdings stream — quarterly Form 13F filings from large managers, used to track where big money is positioned.

How to read it

Stream C parses Form 13F, the quarterly reports institutional managers with over $100M in U.S. equities must file with the SEC. It shows long U.S. equity positions as of quarter-end, letting you track how large, sophisticated managers are positioned and how that shifts. The big caveat is timing: 13Fs are filed up to 45 days after quarter-end and only show a snapshot, so the data is inherently backward-looking and incomplete (no shorts, no non-U.S. or non-equity holdings). Use it to understand institutional lean and consensus, not to front-run anyone.

How practitioners use it

Used as context among multiple indicators — never as a standalone signal to act.

Less common professional uses

Power move: aggregate a curated set of managers into a 'smart-money' basket and watch the basket's net rotation rather than any single fund. Caveat: 13Fs omit shorts, options nuance, and international holdings, so a manager's real book can look very different from its 13F. Because filings lag up to 45 days, a 'new' position may already be sold — this is a positioning and provenance-education tool, not a live signal. It is a Class-C-flavored snapshot by nature.
