Definition
A color-coded treemap of the market where size reflects weight and color reflects performance, giving an at-a-glance view of what's moving.
How to read it
The Market Heatmap is a visual overview of the whole market at once. It draws a treemap where each tile is a symbol or sector, the tile's size reflects its weight (often market cap), and its color reflects performance — typically green for up, red for down, with intensity showing magnitude. In one glance you can see whether a move is broad or narrow, which sectors lead and lag, and where the action is concentrated. It is an orientation tool, the fastest way to get situational awareness before drilling in.
How practitioners use it
Used as context among multiple indicators — never as a standalone signal to act.
Less common professional uses
Power move: read breadth from the map — lots of small green tiles vs. one big green tile tells very different stories about market health. Caveat: color shows performance over a chosen window; a 'green' name can still be in a downtrend on a longer horizon, so confirm on the chart. Cap-weighted sizing means a few mega-caps dominate the picture — an equal-weight lens can tell a different breadth story.
