Definition
Weekly CFTC report breaking down open interest in futures markets by trader category (commercials/hedgers, large speculators/non-commercials, and small traders), used to gauge how crowded positioning has become.
How to read it
COT shows who holds futures positions, split into categories. In the legacy report, 'commercials' are hedgers (producers/merchants who use the physical market), 'non-commercials' are large speculators (funds), and the remainder are small non-reportable traders. The common contrarian read: large specs tend to be most net-long near tops and most net-short near bottoms, while commercials sit on the other side. Positioning is a condition, not a trigger. Data is reported as of Tuesday's close and released Friday afternoon, so it carries a structural 3-day lag (longer around holidays), and it cannot time entries.
How practitioners use it
Used as context among multiple indicators — never as a standalone signal to act.
Less common professional uses
Normalize net positioning as a percentile of its own 1-3 year distribution (COT index): a reading near the 95th+ or 5th percentile flags a positioning extreme far better than a raw contract count. The 'commercials as smart money' premise is contested: in financial futures (equity indices, Treasuries) commercials include dealers hedging client flow, so their net is a hedging artifact, not a directional bet, and reading it as smart-money conviction can mislead. The disaggregated and Traders-in-Financial-Futures (TFF) reports split categories more finely (Producer/Merchant, Swap Dealer, Managed Money, Asset Manager) and often give a cleaner speculative signal than the legacy non-commercial bucket. Watch open-interest context: rising price on rising OI with specs adding longs is trend confirmation; a positioning extreme with OI rolling over warns of a crowded unwind. The Tuesday-to-Friday reporting lag means a sharp Wednesday-Friday reversal is invisible until the next report; never treat COT as a real-time gauge.
