Breakeven(s)

Education only · our voice · free public data

Definition

The underlying price(s) at expiration at which the position's total P&L is exactly zero (premium recovered but no profit). Single-direction spreads have one breakeven; range structures (straddles, condors) have two.

How to read it

Breakevens translate the premium you paid or received into the price move you need. For a long call: breakeven = strike + premium. For a long put: strike - premium. For a debit call spread: lower strike + net debit. For a short straddle: strike +/- total credit. The distance from the current price to the nearest breakeven is the 'cushion' or the 'hurdle'; comparing that distance to the expected move (roughly IV x sqrt(DTE/365) x price) tells you whether the market's own priced-in move even reaches your breakeven.

How practitioners use it

Used as context among multiple indicators — never as a standalone signal to act.

Less common professional uses

The expiry breakeven ignores time value and vega: a position can be at its expiry-breakeven price yet show a large mark-to-market gain or loss before expiry because remaining extrinsic value and IV changes have not yet decayed - the 'breakeven' is only exact at t=0 remaining. Compare breakeven distance to the option-IMPLIED expected move, not to your gut: if BE sits inside the ~1-sigma implied move (IV x sqrt(DTE/365) x S), the market already prices reaching it, which is reflected in the option's cost; edge exists only if your forecast move exceeds the implied one. For structures with skew-financed legs (risk reversals), the breakeven on the financed side can be surprisingly close because the sold spread subsidizes it - but that same financing creates a second, adverse breakeven/loss zone on the sold side that the headline breakeven hides.
