Breadth & participation

Advancers / Decliners (A/D)

Education only · our voice · free public data

Definition

Count of advancing versus declining stocks each session, expressed as a ratio or cumulated into the advance-decline line, measuring how broadly a move is participated in.

How to read it

Advancers/decliners tally how many stocks rose versus fell. The daily A/D ratio (or net advancers) gauges session breadth, while the cumulative A/D line (running sum of net advancers) tracks participation over time. A rising index confirmed by a rising A/D line is healthy; an index making new highs while the A/D line lags is a classic bearish divergence. Because it counts every stock equally, the A/D line often reveals broad weakness or strength that a cap-weighted index masks.

How practitioners use it

Used as context among multiple indicators — never as a standalone signal to act.

Less common professional uses

The A/D line is heavily influenced by the composition of the underlying universe; a broad-market A/D (e.g. NYSE) is contaminated by interest-rate-sensitive issues (closed-end funds, preferreds, ADRs) that can distort it, so a common-stock-only A/D line is a cleaner read. Bearish A/D divergences at tops can lead by many months, making them a condition, not a trigger; acting too early on a divergence is a frequent error. 'Breadth thrusts' (e.g. a 10-day surge in advancers, Zweig-type) measured from the A/D data have historically flagged durable bottoms, a confirmatory rather than contrarian use. Up-volume vs down-volume (volume-weighted breadth) can confirm or contradict the raw issue count; a positive A/D ratio on negative volume breadth signals thin, low-conviction participation. The daily count is EOD; there is no meaningful reporting lag, but universe changes and holiday sessions can create artifacts in the cumulative line.
